Information Literacy ...

... is the ability to understand, navigate, and use information effectively. As information is a prominent part of all facets of our modern society and lifestyle, Middlesex Community College (MxCC) recognizes the importance of information literacy in college education.

The Toolkit

In 2006, an Information Task Force was formed by faculty members from all program divisions as well as MxCC librarians in an effort to evaluate MxCC’s information literacy instruction and to design a new framework for its delivery. In the Fall of 2007, in response to President Nieves’ directive, the task force, chaired by John Shafer, Professor of Humanities/Arts, created MxCC's Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (see IL @ MxCC tab) based on the Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. In addition, it is important to note that these IL learning outcomes address the requirements stated in NEASC Standards for Accreditation, Standards 4 and 7.

In acknowledgement of the importance of students' attaining information literacy competency at MxCC and beyond, this toolkit offers various guidelines and best practices to achieve this goal, and suggests ways librarians and faculty members can work together on this initiative.
